Thine Is the Kingdom

Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “My religion is summed up in the first two words of the Lord’s Prayer.”  My own religion is summed up in four words that come near the end of that same prayer: Thine is the kingdom.  Jesus began his ministry by proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”  People in Jesus’ day had been waiting for God’s kingdom to come for a long time.  People are still waiting, still praying, “Thy kingdom come,” and they will wait until doomsday unless they pay attention to what he actually said.  Jesus said the kingdom is at hand – not in some future time and place but right here, right now, within reach.  So why does it elude our grasp?  This is where those four words from the Lord’s prayer come in, and why we need to repent, which literally means to change our way of thinking.  We pray, “Thine is the kingdom,” but we usually mean, “Mine is the kingdom.”
