On Getting and Giving

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7)

When our minds are set on getting, there is never enough, no matter how much we have. When our minds are set on giving, there is always enough, no matter how little you have. This is one of the great secrets of life. But like many of the great secrets in life, it is counterintuitive. When we feel we don’t have enough, we naturally try to get more. But even if we succeed in getting more, we discover it is somehow never enough. So we try to get still more. Around and around we go, never getting anywhere with all our getting. And we never will, unless we do an about-face.

This is the hard part. When we feel like we don’t have enough, that’s our signal to start giving – not foolish giving but not token giving, either. We need to give out of a sense of abundance that we may not feel we have. But I promise something miraculous will happen, not necessarily in our bank account but in our frame of mind. We’ll stop thinking about what we don’t have and start appreciating what we do. We’ll make the great discovery that true wealth comes from giving not getting.
